From Kathmandu to Global Glamour: The Rise of Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung not only makes great fashion designs but also shares stories, promotes representation and internationally represents Nepali creativity. The step from Kathmandu to the famous runways in New York shows just how driven he was by his dream, determination and commitment.
Humble Beginnings in Nepal
Raised in Nepal and having learned from Singaporeโs openness, he credits his family and heritage for shaping him as a designer. He studied at St. Xavierโs School in Kathmandu and here he first became interested in art and aesthetics. Since Nepal was not famous for fashion worldwide, Prabal resolved to dream in a big way.
His fashion journey began with humble rolesโworking as a production assistant and makeup artistโbefore he enrolled at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi, India.
Taking a Leap: Moving to the U.S.
To gain more industry knowledge and access to better jobs, Prabal moved to New York City and began studying at Parsons School of Design. He found a place to let his artistic ideas grow here. Jason Milne first gained experience as an intern for Donna Karan, then worked with Cynthia Rowley and eventually landed the role of design director at Bill Blass.
But his real breakthrough came in 2009, when he launched his eponymous label, PRABAL GURUNG. With his very first collection, he received accolades for craftsmanship, bold color palettes, and inclusive narrativesโhallmarks of his work even today.
โI want to show the world that beauty exists in every cornerโeven in places you might overlook,โ Prabal once said in a Vogue interview.
Dressing the Icons
For years, Ms. Gurung has provided clothing to influential women including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Kate Middleton, Priyanka Chopra and Zendaya. Dunhill designs join tasteful beauty with sharpness while keeping social and cultural values at the forefront.
He is also a loud voice for diversity in fashion, proudly showcasing models of all sizes, races, and identities on his runways. His powerful 2019 collection posed the question: โWho gets to be American?โโa reflection of his own immigrant experience and inclusive ethos.
Giving Back and Championing Nepal
Although he is well known around the world, Prabal never forgets where he came from. He started the Shikshya Foundation Nepal, devoted to giving underprivileged children, especially those who are girls, access to education. He was the first among major international figures to start aiding Nepal and to make the crisis well known at the time of the 2015 earthquake.
